The Wii's total lifetime sales have surpassed 101 million units, making it Nintendo's best-selling home system and, as of 2020, the fourth best-selling home console of all time.
Nintendo's Wii established the company as a major participant in the video game hardware business. Following the release of motion-controlled games through the Wii Remote, Microsoft and Sony created their own rival devices, the Kinect and PlayStation Move, respectively. Nintendo discovered that, although the Wii extended the demographics they desired, the core gaming population had abandoned the Wii. The Wii U, the Wii's successor, attempted to reclaim the core gamer market by adding capabilities to the Wii. The Wii U was introduced in 2012, and Nintendo sold both systems for the rest of the year. The Wii was officially terminated in October 2013, while Nintendo continued to manufacture and promote the Wii Mini until 2017, and supplied a subset of the Wii's online services until 2019.
